TEMPORARY VISA

visitor location

A Temporary Resident Visa, also known as visitor’s visa or entry visa, allows the foreign nationals to enter and/or re-enter the country. Broadly, it is of three types:

  • Visitor Visas: Foreign nationals who want to visit Canada for a limited time period. This program allows them to remain in Canada for up to six months, with a condition that they cannot work.

  • Student Visas: Study in Canada for an extended period of time. If permission granted to the candidates, the study permit will be valid for the duration of the period of study.

  • Work Permits: Professionals who want to work in Canada for full time need not to obtain a work permit. You are eligible to work up to the length of the contract offered by the Canadian employer.

International residents can travel to and enter Canada on a visitor visa for a limited time. If you are travelling to Canada as a student, temporary worker, or simply to visit, you will need a visitor visa if you are from a country that is not excluded from visiting visa requirements. Most visitors can stay for up to 6 months in Canada. The border services officer may allow you to stay for less or more than 6 months at port of entry. If so, they’ll put the date you need to leave by in your passport. They might provide visitor record which will show the date you need to leave by.

Requirements: You must

  • have a valid travel document, such as a passport.

  • satisfy an immigration officer that you have ties to your country of origin, such as a job, home and family, which will compel you to return.

  • satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit.

  • have sufficient funds for your stay; The amount of money you will need can vary with the circumstances of the visit, how long you will stay and whether you will stay in a hotel or with friends or relatives.

  • required to include biometric information in the application such as fingerprints and photograph at a biometric collection service point.

*In some situations you may also need a letter of invitation from someone who lives in Canada.

Important to note:

  • Foreign nationals who want to stay longer than six months must apply while their temporary residence status is still in effect. At least 30 days before your current status expires, you should apply for an extension. If your existing visa expires while your application for an extension is being reviewed, you may stay in Canada until a decision is made.
